Pile foundation

Why pile foundation?

When the soil has insufficient bearing capacity to support the weight of the building.
Also for constructions in wetlands.

Motivation phase
Preparation placement of pile foundation.

1: Soil testing to determine bearing capacity and the presence of water layers.
2: Create design based on the soil survey and construction project requirements.
3: Selection of piles based on soil survey and foundation design.
4: If necessary, remove soil for site preparation.
5: Setting up installation equipment.

Information phase
Installation of pile foundation, bored piles

1:Screwed posts are installed with a drill, which has a threaded head and a cone which displaces the soil against the edge of the hole.
After the pile is at the correct depth, the drill bit is pulled back, the hollow core of the drill bit forces concrete into the hole, creating the pile.
After the drill is removed from the hole, rebar is immediately sunk or vibrated into the concrete. The reinforcement can also be applied in advance.

Information phase
Pile driving

* Position the pile driver over where the first pile is to be placed.
* A large hammer, the ram block is placed on the top of the pole.
* The ram block is pulled up by a lifting machine and then released, driving the pile into the ground.
* During the piling proces, the penetration depth of the pile is checked, thus ensuring that the pile reaches the required depth.
* One repeats the process for each pile so that the piles are placed evenly according to the foundation design.
* After installation, a quality check is conducted to inspect that the poles are correctly placed and meet the required specification.

Information phase
Bearing capacity of pile foundations.

> Bearing capacity of pile foundations refers to their ability to carry the load of a structure and transfer it to the subsoil.
> The carrying capacity depends on severals factors:
1: Load characteristics, nature and extent of loads applied to the structure.( weight of the structure, live loads and wind and seismic loads)
2: Foundation design.
* Determining carrying capacity:
> Several methods are used for this, including lab tests, field tests and calculations based on geotechnical data.

Consolidation phase
Some questions.

1: What are pile foundations and what are they used for?
2: What factors determine the choise of the type of pile foundation used for a construction project?
3: What are the main steps in the installation process?
4: What are the advantages of pile foundations?
5: What role do pile foundations play in ensuring safety of structures?
