Different Types of Ventilation

This Digital Learning Path provides a brief description of ventilation and its different types. Ventilation is the process of bringing outdoor air into a building or room and distributing it within the space. Its primary purpose is to provide healthy air for people to breathe by diluting and removing pollutants. The material identifies three basic elements of building ventilation:Ventilation rate: The amount and quality of outdoor air provided to the space. Airflow direction: The overall movement of air within the building, from clean zones to dirty zones. Air distribution or airflow pattern: Efficient delivery of outdoor air to all parts of the space and effective removal of airborne pollutants generated within the space. The material categorizes ventilation into five types: Natural Ventilation: Relies on natural forces like wind and thermal buoyancy to drive outdoor air through openings in the building. Factors such as climate, human behavior, and building design influence its effectiveness.Mechanical Ventilation: Uses mechanical fans to supply or exhaust air from the room. The type of mechanical ventilation system depends on the climate and specific requirements of the space. Hybrid Ventilation: Combines natural ventilation with mechanical ventilation to achieve the desired airflow rate when natural ventilation alone is insufficient. Spot Ventilation: Involves the use of local exhaust fans, typically in bathrooms or kitchens, to remove moisture and indoor air pollutants at the source. Task Ambient Conditioning (TAC): A type of ventilation system that aims to provide personalized comfort by addressing individual temperature preferences. The material further explains the characteristics, benefits, and challenges associated with each type of ventilation. It emphasizes the importance of considering ventilation systems based on the building's usage, location, and specific requirements.
